I think the set design is just trying too hard here. GITS often took place in regular looking office spaces. I think that helped the high tech aspects stand out. This does the opposite.
I can see what you mean but I think when it’s a live action movie, especially the IMAX version things tend to be more over the top to make the film stand out. I am so visually orientated that i see ’oh pretty picture’ and just love it!
Good directing isn’t about creating a spectacle. It’s about making you feel something, about making you care. I guess we’ll see if this is just fireworks, or if there’s more to it, when the movie comes out.
Cyberpunk as we know it has changed. The world we live in, and as a result the future we predict has changed. Many of the visual aspects that are greatly enjoyed about 80s and even 90s cyberpunk were lost to the mass cultural unconscious. We no longer have VHS in the background of shots, we don’t have the same type of office construction that leaks through into a movie set in order to add realism to the audience’s of the era. In all likelihood we’re going to receive a modernized version of the future, and one that will probably be motivated by sheer generation of revenue
I think you’re missing the point. The idea of keeping some things the same, like leather and wood desks as a style, is to create a contrast with the high-tech pieces in the film. Gibson always made the point that the future would have a lot of the same buildings, cars, etc … that you see on the road today. Literally the same, because Cyberpunk is about how we won’t just clear everything away and start over with hyper-futuristic stuff. We’ll retro-fit it, and we’ll still have styles from previous generations either being retro, or simply having been left over. I think it dulls Cyberpunk to ignore that.
Oh I completely understand what what you meant, I was talking about the current more “mainstream” approach to cyberpunk. I completely agree with you.
But the legitimate question is “What does Rupert Sanders think cyberpunk is?” I do think it’s still too early to tell from set photos, but looking at this shot it can be two things… practical greeble or a digital screen showing off some pattern. The former I think is fine, again being too early to tell. The latter would be what coredump is saying “trying too hard” to look flashy and 2017 Hollywood cyberpunk. Yes ideally it should hew towards Johnny Mnemonic 80s corporate for it to be legit but I think they are trying to push all the manga buttons and this seems to follow that. I think we’ll all forgive some attempts to be flashy if the story is good. That’s the one element that’s going to be all or nothing.
